Rabbit up for adoption

In summary

Adopting a shelter rabbit in Spain gives a home to an abandoned rabbit in exchange for a donation that usually covers a vet check and, when needed, neutering. Rabbits live 8-12 years, need room to move, unlimited hay and a vet who specialises in exotics — they are not 'cage pets' or a present for children.

Guide

Before adopting a rabbit

Before adopting, be clear about the following. It will save you time and spare the pet an unnecessary change of home.

1

They are NOT children's pets: they live 8-12 years and need an exotics vet, not a general one. Yearly vet cost: €150-300.

2

Minimum space: a 120×60 cm enclosure plus free areas at home to run (at least 3-4 hours a day out of the enclosure).

3

Neutering is essential: unspayed females have an 80% risk of uterine cancer. Cost: €100-200.

4

Right diet: 80% good hay plus fresh vegetables and a limited amount of quality pellets. No bread, iceberg lettuce or corn.

5

Living together: rabbits are social, ideally in pairs (neutered male and female). Compatible with calm cats.

6

Exotics vet: NOT every vet treats rabbits. Look for shelters in areas with an exotics vet nearby.

7

Chewing: rabbits chew cables and furniture. You'll need to rabbit-proof your home (protected cables, corners, toxic plants out of reach).

8

They shouldn't be carried around like soft toys: it stresses them. Learn how to handle rabbits before adopting.
