Adopt a shelter dog
Every year, thousands of dogs are rescued by Spanish shelters. Find the perfect companion, learn their history and give them a second chance.
Adopt and care for them for life — caring is helping.

In summary
Adopting a shelter dog in Spain means giving a home to a rescued animal in exchange for a one-off donation (usually €100-300) that covers vaccines, microchip, deworming and neutering. Unlike buying, the dog arrives already identified, checked by a vet and with a personality the shelter knows well, so they can help you find the one that fits your life.

Before adopting a dog
Before adopting, be clear about the following. It will save you time and spare the pet an unnecessary change of home.
Space and time: dogs need daily walks (at least 2 a day) and constant attention. If you live in a small flat, favour small or medium breeds.
Adult size: a small puppy can grow into a 40 kg dog. Always ask for the estimated adult size when the breed is unknown.
Living together: if you have children, other pets or sensitive neighbours, tell the shelter. They know each dog's temperament.
Estimated yearly cost: €600-1,500 including food, vet, vaccines, parasite treatment and insurance. More for large dogs.
Commitment: a medium-sized dog lives 10-14 years. Make sure your life situation allows for that.
Breed vs mixed breed: individual character matters more than breed. Mixed breeds tend to have fewer inherited genetic problems.
Adoption vs pedigree puppy: shelters prioritise responsible adoption over breed purity. If you want a specific breed, there are specialised shelters.
Potentially dangerous breeds (PPP in Spain): you need a licence and liability insurance, both required by law.
