Adopt a rescued reptile

Reptiles need more technical know-how than any other pet: temperature, humidity, a specialised diet, UVB and handling. If you're ready, adopting a rescued one saves its life.

Reptile up for adoption

In summary

Adopting a rescued reptile in Spain (tortoises, geckos, bearded dragons, snakes) gives a home to an exotic animal, often surrendered because its owners didn't know how to care for it. Each species needs a specific terrarium with controlled temperature, UVB and humidity, plus an exotics vet. Some tortoises live past 50: it's a lifelong commitment.

Guide

Before adopting a reptile

Before adopting, be clear about the following. It will save you time and spare the pet an unnecessary change of home.

1

The species is CRITICAL: each reptile has very different needs. Bearded dragon ≠ iguana ≠ tortoise. Research the specific species before committing.

2

The right terrarium: correct size, daily UVB lighting, heat lamp, thermostat and thermometer/hygrometer. Initial setup: €200-800.

3

Life expectancy: tortoise 40-80 years · bearded dragon 8-15 · leopard gecko 15-20 · snakes 15-30. Adopting a tortoise is a multi-generational commitment.

4

An exotics vet is ESSENTIAL: reptiles hide illness. By the time they show symptoms they are usually very ill.

5

Specialised diet: insectivores (bearded dragons, geckos), herbivores (tortoises, iguanas) and carnivores (snakes fed frozen-thawed rodents). No improvising.

6

They are NOT 'tamed' like mammals. They don't seek your company or show affection in the usual sense. The relationship is about respect, not affection.

7

Salmonella risk: 10-30% of reptiles carry salmonella. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling. Not suitable for homes with children under 5 or immunocompromised people.

8

Correct handling: many lizards drop their tail when stressed (autotomy). Lift from below, support the body well and keep sessions short.
