1. What it is and what it does
Chip collar, Mizuu's NFC collar, is a tag or accessory with a proximity chip that, when scanned with a compatible phone, opens the animal's public digital passport page: photo, species, microchip if it has one, owner's contact, up-to-date vaccinations and instructions for returning it.
It is a complement to the compulsory official microchip (required under mandatory microchipping legislation). It does not replace the subcutaneous microchip; it lets whoever finds the animal contact you without needing to take it to a clinic to read the chip.
2. Purchase and delivery
The collar is offered through the charity shop at a fixed retail price of €19.90 (shipping not included). Profit distribution follows the shop's general rules and, in the case of adoption through Mizuu, part goes directly to the ceding rescue as described in the adoption terms.
Rescues can buy collars from the wholesaler at a reduced price (€5 per unit) to include them in their adoption contracts and recover the cost.
3. Activation and linking
Each collar has a unique code in the format WP-XXXXXX printed on it. To activate it:
- You scan the tag or enter the code at
/nfc/WP-XXXXXX. - You log in and choose which of your pets to link it to.
- The system associates the tag with that pet's passport — from then on, scanning the tag opens the public passport.
Only the animal's registered owner (or family members with permissions) can activate and unlink the tag.
4. Scanner data
When someone scans the NFC tag and the public passport page opens:
- Mizuu logs the IP, user-agent and, if the person accepts the browser permission, the approximate geographic coordinates in order to send the owner an alert with the location.
- The person scanning does not need to register with Mizuu to view the public passport and contact the owner.
- This data is used exclusively to notify the owner that their pet has been found and is kept for a reasonable period (up to 30 days) for traceability.
5. Data shown when scanned
By default, the public passport shows:
- The animal's name and photo.
- Digital passport and, if available, microchip.
- Status (lost / out for a walk / at home).
- Contact phone and owner's message (if configured).
- A note such as "corn allergy" or other conditions the owner wants to record for emergencies.
The owner controls what is shown from the NFC settings: they can hide the phone number and leave only the "Alert the owner" button, which sends a push notification and email without revealing the number.
6. Deregistering and transferring the tag
The owner can unlink the collar at any time from their dashboard:
- Lost collar — the tag stops working, preventing whoever finds it from accessing the passport.
- Change of pet — the same collar can be reassigned to another pet of your own.
- Transfer to another owner — only allowed when the pet is transferred (adoption through Mizuu); the tag stays with the animal and the new owner manages it.
7. Limitations of liability
The NFC collar is a passive device, with no battery or connection of its own. Mizuu:
- Does not guarantee uninterrupted availability of the web service (a scan without internet on the scanner's side will not work).
- Accepts no liability for the decision of whoever finds the animal to alert the owner or not.
- Is not an active geolocation device — it does not track the animal's position in real time.
For real-time location there are other products on the market (dedicated pet GPS trackers) that Mizuu may integrate in the future.
