Is the Agapornis Lilianae a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
12-25 €/month
Food and supplements 8-15 €/month; exotics vet spread over the year (annual check-up ~40-60 €); cage, perches and toys as an initial investment. Emergencies and breeding are extra.
History and origin
Native to southern Africa. A white eye-ring like the masked lovebird.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT a cage-only life.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual temperament. **Other birds:** best kept in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Older pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Agapornis Lilianae
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 10-15 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Hand-feeding; development of the orange face and white eye-ring
Juvenile
2-10 months
Weaning and socialisation; the smallest of the eye-ring lovebirds
Adult
0.5-8 years
Seed and vegetable diet; pair life and enrichment
Senior
8-15 years
Weight and plumage control and regular check-ups
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is even better.
Feeding: SEEDS alone are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables every day.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day outside the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual health check.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Pellets as the base, leafy vegetables daily and occasional fruit; cuttlebone for calcium. Seeds only as a treat. Avoid avocado, chocolate and salt.
✂️ Grooming
Minimal: offer a regular bath. Nails and beak maintain themselves with branches and toys; do not clip the wings without veterinary advice.
🎓 Training
Handling and socialisation with positive reinforcement and short sessions. An uncommon species as a pet, so it is best to get it used to human presence while young.
🏃 Exercise
1-2 hours daily of supervised free flight and enrichment with foraging toys.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 10-15 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind you will share your whole adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
