Ideal for
- ✓Families with time for daily interaction
- ✓Spacious homes (large birds need a room)
- ✓Anyone ready for a decades-long commitment (parrots live a long time)
Reconsider if
- ×Homes with no time to socialise
- ×Anyone who cannot tolerate noise (all parrots vocalise)
- ×Homes with no space for flight

Is the Agapornis Personata a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
12-25 €/month
Food and supplements 8-15 €/month; exotics vet spread over the year (annual check-up ~40-60 €); cage, perches and toys as an initial investment. Spikes for emergencies or breeding.
History and origin
A black-faced (masked) lovebird endemic to northern Tanzania; very popular as an ornamental bird for its characteristic mask.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT a cage-only life.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual temperament. **Other birds:** best kept in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Older pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Agapornis Personata
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 10-15 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Rearing, warmth and weaning
Juvenile
2-12 months
Moult, socialisation, varied diet
Adult
1-10 years
Territorial behaviour, breeding, weight
Senior

Liver/kidney and joint check-ups
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is even better.
Feeding: SEEDS alone are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables every day.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day outside the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual health check.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A pellet base, leafy vegetables daily and a little fruit; cuttlebone for calcium. Seeds only as a treat. Avoid avocado, chocolate, caffeine and salt.
✂️ Grooming
It needs hardly any: it enjoys bathing. Nails and beak wear down with natural branches and toys.
🎓 Training
Tamed with positive reinforcement and consistency. It is peaceful, but like all lovebirds it can deliver territorial nips during the breeding season.
🏃 Exercise
1-2 hours daily of supervised flight and foraging and destruction toys.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 10-15 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind you will share your whole adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
