Is the Arrocero de Java a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
10-20 €/month
Food (seed mix, egg food and vegetables) and sand 6-12 €/month; avian vet spread over the year (annual check-up ~40-60 €); cage, perches and bath as an initial investment. Emergencies separate.
History and origin
Originating from Indonesia (Java). Thick pink beak, grey-white-black plumage.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual temperament. **Other birds:** better in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Arrocero de Java
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 5-8 años.
Chick
0-1 month
Altricial; fed by the parents and nest temperature control.
Juvenile
1-4 months
Dark beak and dull plumage; the grey/white and red beak define the adult.
Adult
4 months-5 years
Robust and gregarious; a diet of paddy rice, millet and greens.
Senior
6-8 years
Weight and obesity control; monitor the legs and digestive system.
Care
Cage: minimum twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: minimum 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual tests.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A specific mix for exotics/granivores with egg food added during moulting and breeding, some vegetables (romaine lettuce, cucumber) and cuttlebone for calcium.
✂️ Grooming
Almost none: offer a bath with water so it can bathe. A dust-free, well-ventilated environment.
🎓 Training
Not a hand-tame bird: minimise stress and get it used to your presence without forcing handling. It is very sociable, so house it in a pair or small group.
🏃 Exercise
A large, horizontal cage or aviary to fly from perch to perch; the more space, the better.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 5-8 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, consider that you will live with it through your entire adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
