Is the Canario de Color a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
10-20 €/month
Food (seed mix, egg food and greens) and sand 6-12 €/month; avian vet pro-rated (annual check-up ~40-60 €); cage, perches and bath as an initial investment. Emergencies extra.
History and origin
Of international origin. Bred for colour (intense red, yellow, white, etc.).
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** better in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Canario de Color
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 10-12 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Weaning and first intake of seeds; pigment supplementation only in red lipochrome birds.
Juvenile
2-12 months
Juvenile moult in which the colour is fixed; carotenoid supplementation where appropriate.
Adult
1-7 years
Showing and breeding; pigment management (canthaxanthin) during the annual moult.
Senior
8-12 years
Loss of colour intensity; monitor the liver for excess dyes.
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings extended. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours a day outside the cage in a safe area.
Veterinarian: an avian specialist vet (exotic vet). Annual tests.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A canary-specific seed mix with egg food during the moult and breeding, greens (romaine lettuce, broccoli, cucumber) and cuttlebone. In red varieties, provide natural carotenoids in the food.
✂️ Grooming
Almost none: offer a bath so it can bathe. It requires no handling; keep the cage clean and dust-free.
🎓 Training
It is not a hand bird: get it used to your presence without forcing it. It can live alone (many males are kept alone to encourage song) or in a group in an aviary.
🏃 Exercise
A large, horizontal cage to fly from perch to perch; the bigger the better for its musculature and wellbeing.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 10-12 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, consider that you will live with it throughout your adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Canario de Color
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓Faecal exam (coccidia, atoxoplasma and parasites)
- ✓Screening for air-sac mites (Sternostoma)
- ✓Red mite (Dermanyssus) check on skin and feathers
- ✓Screening for Macrorhabdus ornithogaster (megabacteria)
- ✓Leg inspection (scaly leg mite/knemidocoptosis)
Prevention
A varied canary seed mix with egg food during the moult and greens, cuttlebone for calcium, red mite control, quarantine and protection from draughts and sudden temperature changes.
Check-up schedule
Annual check-up with an avian vet; watch the moult and weight especially. In red colour canaries, carotenoid supplementation is provided through food, never with banned dyes.
