💶 Estimated cost of ownership
10-22 €/month
Food (seed mix, egg food and vegetables) and grit 6-12 €/month; avian vet prorated (annual check-up ~40-60 €); cage, perches and bath tub as an initial investment. Emergencies separate.
History and origin
Native to Belgium. Distinctive song that mimics the sound of water.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual temperament. **Other birds:** better in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Canario Malinois (Waterslager)
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 10-12 años.
Chick
0-1.5 months
Rearing with egg food; warmth of the nest and song development
Juvenile
1.5-12 months
First moult; learning the male's water song (waterslager)
Adult
1-7 years
Diet of seed mix, egg food and vegetables; annual moult and singing season
Senior
7-12 years
Weight control, megabacteriosis and support during the moult
Care
Cage: at least double the size of the bird with its wings outstretched. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A seed mix specific to song canaries with egg food, varied vegetables and cuttlebone for calcium. A balanced diet supports a full song.
✂️ Grooming
Almost none: offer a bath tub so it can bathe. It requires no handling; keep the cage clean and dust-free.
🎓 Training
It is not a hand-tame bird. The song is partly innate and partly learned: young birds refine it by listening to adult males. House the male alone or with little interference to encourage song learning.
🏃 Exercise
A spacious, horizontal cage to fly from perch to perch; the more space the better.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 10-12 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will share your entire adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Canario Malinois (Waterslager)
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓Faecal examination (coccidia, atoxoplasma and parasites)
- ✓Screening for air-sac mites (Sternostoma, affects the song)
- ✓Check for red mite (Dermanyssus)
- ✓Screening for Macrorhabdus ornithogaster (megabacteria)
- ✓Inspection of legs and plumage
Prevention
A varied seed mix with egg food and vegetables, calcium (cuttlebone), red mite control, quarantine and a draught-free environment. Screening for air-sac mites is a priority given its effect on the song.
Check-up schedule
Annual check-up with an avian vet; monitor the song, the moult and weight.
Warning signs
- !Loss or deterioration of the song (possible air-sac mite)
- !Clicking or laboured breathing
- !Fluffed-up plumage and a hunched, balled-up posture
- !Altered droppings and weight loss
