Reconsider if

Is the Canario Mosaico a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
10-20 €/month
Food (seed mix, egg food and greens) and grit 6-12 €/month; avian vet prorated (annual check-up ~40-60 €); cage, perches and bath dish as an initial investment. Emergencies separate.
History and origin
Originates from International. Distinctive mosaic pattern with yellow/white markings.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** best in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Canario Mosaico
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 8-12 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Weaning; the mosaic dimorphism is not yet visible.
Juvenile
2-12 months
First moult, which defines the mosaic pattern (selection points).
Adult
1-7 years
Showing and breeding; controlled pigment supplement during the moult.
Senior
8-12 years
Loss of pattern contrast; monitor the liver and weight.
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is best.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day outside the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A canary-specific seed mix with egg food during the moult, greens (romaine lettuce, broccoli) and cuttlebone. Provide natural carotenoids in the diet to enhance the coloured areas.
✂️ Grooming
Almost none: offer a bath dish so it can bathe. No handling required; keep the cage clean.
🎓 Training
Not a hand-tame bird: get it used to your presence without forcing it. It can live alone or in a group in a large aviary.
🏃 Exercise
A large, horizontal cage to fly from perch to perch; the more space, the better.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 8-12 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, consider that you will live with it throughout your adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
