Ideal for
- ✓Families with time for daily interaction
- ✓Spacious homes (large birds need a room)
- ✓Those who accept a decades-long commitment (parrots live a long time)
Reconsider if
- ×Households with no time to socialise the bird
- ×Those who cannot tolerate noise (all parrots vocalise)
- ×Homes with no space to fly

Is the Canario Roller a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
15-25 €/month
Seed mix and rearing food: 6-10 €/month. Greens, cuttlebone and vitamins: 3-5 €/month. Cleaning and sand: 2-3 €/month. Annual avian vet prorated: 3-5 €/month. Initial cost of the cage and, if showing, specific song cages.
History and origin
Song breed developed in the Harz mountains (Germany) in the 19th century, selected for its soft, guttural song delivered with the beak closed.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** best in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Canario Roller
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 10-12 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Rearing in the nest, hand-feeding and weaning; daily weight monitoring.
Juvenile
2-12 months
First moult, song learning (roller school) and socialisation.
Adult
1-7 years
Full song and breeding performance; balanced diet of seed mix and greens.
Senior
8-12 years
Reduced activity and song; watch for arthritis, lipomas and liver function.
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Canary seed mix, egg-based rearing food during the moult and song season, daily greens, cuttlebone and clean water. Good nutrition underpins vocal quality.
✂️ Grooming
Bath 2-3 times a week, nail and beak monitoring. It is mainly the environment (quiet, smoke-free) that is looked after to protect the respiratory system.
🎓 Training
The 'training' is about song: the young bird learns its rolling repertoire by listening to an adult tutor or recordings, not by handling. It is not a hand-tame bird.
🏃 Exercise
A roomy cage for short flights; during learning and shows smaller cages are sometimes used, but day-to-day life requires space.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 10-12 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will live with it for your whole adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Canario Roller
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓Avian veterinary examination and annual check-up
- ✓Faecal test for coccidia and Atoxoplasma
- ✓Tracheal swab for air-sac mite (Sternostoma)
- ✓Check for leg/face mite (Knemidocoptes)
Prevention
Varied diet, a calm, draught-free environment, a stable photoperiod; young birds should learn the song from an adult tutor male. Quarantine new birds.
Check-up schedule
Annual avian check-up with weight monitoring; particular attention to respiratory health, which is key in a song bird.
