💶 Estimated cost of ownership
15-25 €/month
Seed mix and rearing food: 6-10 €/month. Greens, cuttlebone and vitamins: 3-5 €/month. Cleaning and sand: 2-3 €/month. Annual avian vet prorated: 3-5 €/month. Initial cost of the cage and show cages if taking part in competitions.
History and origin
Spanish song canary breed selected for its 'rolling' timbre melodies; one of the great internationally recognised song breeds.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** best in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.

Vet: avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Canary seed mix, egg-based rearing food during the moult and song season, daily greens, cuttlebone and clean water renewed daily.
✂️ Grooming
Regular bathing, nail and beak monitoring. A healthy environment (free of smoke and sprays) is prioritised given its value as a song bird.
🎓 Training
The young bird learns its repertoire from a tutor of good lineage; it is not about handling or hand-training. It is not a bird to be picked up.
🏃 Exercise
A roomy cage for short flights; optional supervised free flight in a safe room.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 10-12 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will live with it for your whole adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
