Ideal for
- ✓Families with time for daily interaction
- ✓Spacious homes (large birds need a room)
- ✓Those who accept a decades-long commitment (parrots live a long time)
Reconsider if
- ×Households with no time to socialise the bird
- ×Those who cannot tolerate noise (all parrots vocalise)
- ×Homes with no space to fly

Is the Canario Yorkshire a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
15-26 €/month
Seed mix and rearing food: 6-10 €/month. Greens, cuttlebone and vitamins: 3-5 €/month. Cleaning and sand: 2-3 €/month. Annual avian vet prorated: 3-5 €/month. Initial cost of a roomy cage (this is a large canary).
History and origin
Originating in England. Distinctive upright stance, a "guardsman" pose.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** best in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Canario Yorkshire
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 8-12 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Bone growth for the breed's large size; protein-rich hand-feeding.
Juvenile
2-12 months
Development of the upright carriage and 'guardsman' stance; cage training.
Adult
1-7 years
Type shows and breeding; maintaining musculature and carriage without obesity.
Senior
8-12 years
Reduce breeding effort; watch the legs and joints.
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Canary seed mix, egg-based rearing food during the moult, daily greens, cuttlebone and clean water. As a large canary, watch that it does not put on weight through inactivity.
✂️ Grooming
Regular bathing, nail and beak monitoring. It is a type breed: its presence is looked after, but the feathers are not combed or handled.
🎓 Training
Not trainable and not suited to hand handling. It is kept in a cage and observed; brief captures only for health reasons.
🏃 Exercise
A tall, roomy cage so it keeps its upright stance and flies from perch to perch.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 8-12 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will live with it for your whole adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
