Ideal for
- ✓Families with time for daily interaction

- ✓Anyone who accepts a decades-long commitment (parrots live a long time)
Reconsider if
- ×Homes without time to socialise

Is the Cisne Coscoroba a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
40-80 €/month
Waterfowl feed and greens: 20-35 €/month. Pond maintenance (water, pump/filter, electricity): 10-25 €/month. Pro-rated waterfowl vet: 8-15 €/month. Separately: a large initial investment in the pond, predator-proof fencing and permits.
History and origin
Native to South America. A small white swan.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** better in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Older pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Cisne Coscoroba
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 15-25 años.
Cygnet
0-4 months
Precocial waterbird; waterproofing of the down, access to water and early start
Juvenile
4-12 months
Mottled juvenile plumage that whitens; growth and swimming
Adult
1-12 years
A clean, deep pond; an aquatic/plant diet and management as a pair
Senior
12-25 years
Monitoring of the feet, weight and lead poisoning from water
Care
Cage: at least double the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual testing.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Waterfowl/anatid-specific feed, supplemented with grass, aquatic vegetation and greens; access to clean water for feeding and bathing. Do not give it bread.
✂️ Grooming
No human grooming required; it does need pond maintenance, water quality and, depending on regulations and safety, flight control. Regular foot checks.
🎓 Training
It is not trainable. The 'handling' is about the setup: minimal handling, safe capture for check-ups only, and protection from dogs and predators.
🏃 Exercise
It needs a large pond to swim in daily; it is not compatible with a flat or with gardens without water. Its exercise is swimming and grazing.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungi), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 15-25 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, consider that you will share your entire adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
