Is the Conuro Sol a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
40-70 €/month
Pellets, fruit and vegetables: 20-35 €/month. Toys and enrichment: 8-15 €/month. Prorated annual avian vet and lab tests: 10-20 €/month. Separately: large initial cage (150-350 €).
History and origin
Native to South America. Bright orange-yellow.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual temperament. **Other birds:** better as a pair/group (except territorial species). **Other pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Conuro Sol
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 20-30 años.
Chick
0-3 months
Hand-feeding formula and warmth; emergence of the orange/yellow colour over the juvenile green plumage
Juvenile
3-12 months
Weaning, socialisation and managing its loud vocalisation
Adult
1-15 years
Diet of pellets, fruit and vegetables; enrichment and foraging
Senior
15-30 years
Monitoring of joints, weight and periodic veterinary check-ups
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day outside the cage in a safe area.
Vet: avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A base of parrot pellets with daily fruit and vegetables; seeds only as a treat. A seeds-only diet causes fatty liver and vitamin A deficiency.
✂️ Grooming
Frequent bathing/showering, nail and beak monitoring, plumage checks. Feather-plucking is prevented with stimulation, not grooming.
🎓 Training
Very intelligent and affectionate: responds well to positive reinforcement (tricks, 'step up', recall) and learns a few words. Requires daily socialisation.
🏃 Exercise
A spacious cage and 1-3 hours daily of flight and play outside, with plenty of toys to chew. An active, curious and demanding bird.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 20-30 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, consider that you will share your entire adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
