Ideal for
- ✓Families with time for daily interaction
- ✓Spacious flats (large birds require a room)
- ✓Those who accept a decades-long commitment (parrots live a long time)
Reconsider if
- ×Households with no time to socialise
- ×Those who cannot tolerate noise (all parrots vocalise)
- ×Flats without space for flight

Is the Faisán Dorado a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
25-45 €/month
Pheasant feed and grain: €12-22/month. Vegetables, grit and calcium: €3-6/month. Substrate, deworming and aviary cleaning: €5-10/month. Pro-rated avian vet: €5-10/month. Separately: a large initial investment in a secure aviary.
History and origin
Native to China. The male has a spectacular golden-red plumage.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on species + individual character. **Other birds:** better in pairs/groups (except territorial species). **Older pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Faisán Dorado
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 5-15 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Precocial nidifugous; warmth, dry gallinaceous starter feed and coccidia control
Juvenile
2-10 months
Growth; the male develops the golden livery towards its 2nd year
Adult
0.5-8 years
Spacious aviary with substrate; granivorous diet and parasite monitoring
Senior
8-15 years
Weight control, legs and periodic check-ups
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings spread. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual health check.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Pheasant/galliforme feed (maintenance, with more protein during breeding/moult), grain (maize, wheat), vegetables, some fruit and insects. Grit for grinding and calcium for hens.
✂️ Grooming
It does not need grooming; it needs a sand bath and a dry, clean aviary to keep its plumage in good condition and control external parasites.
🎓 Training
It is neither trainable nor a handling bird: it is an ornamental, elusive, flighty bird. 'Handling' is about the setup (safe captures, separating territorial males, protecting from predators).
🏃 Exercise
It needs a spacious aviary where it can run, scratch and take refuge in vegetation; it is not a cage or flat bird. The male is territorial.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems due to stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 5-15 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will live with it through your adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Faisán Dorado
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓Avian/poultry veterinary examination
- ✓Faecal analysis and deworming (capillaria, ascarids)
- ✓Monitoring for Syngamus trachea (respiratory worm, 'gapeworm')

Prevention
A spacious aviary with dry, well-drained ground, ground rotation or treatment for parasites, periodic deworming, shelter from rain and predators. Health surveillance in line with poultry regulations.
Check-up schedule
Periodic check-ups and faecal analysis (ground-dwelling galliformes accumulate parasites); reinforce in autumn/spring.
Warning signs
- !Open-beaked breathing and neck stretching (gapeworm)
- !Sulphur-yellow droppings (histomoniasis)
- !Bloody diarrhoea (coccidiosis)
- !Ruffled feathers and isolation
