Is the Gorrión de Cabeza Marrón a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
15-25 €/month
Exotic seed mix and millet: 6-10 €/month. Greens, cuttlebone and supplements: 2-4 €/month. Cleaning and substrate: 2-3 €/month. Pro-rated avian vet care: 3-5 €/month. (Cost per pair; they should be kept in company.)
History and origin
Native to India. A small tropical finch.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on species + individual character. **Other birds:** best in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Gorrión de Cabeza Marrón
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 5-8 años.
Chick
0-1 month
Nest-bound; fed animal protein (insects) during growth.
Juvenile
1-4 months
Dull brownish plumage; dispersal and adaptation to the granivorous diet.
Adult
4 months-5 years
A hardy, gregarious bird; a seed diet with added insects during breeding.
Senior
5-8 years
Lower activity; watch for external parasites and digestive issues.
Care
Cage: at least double the size of the bird with its wings outstretched. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours a day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A seed mix for exotics/tropical granivores, millet spray, some tender greens, cuttlebone and protein (rearing paste or small insects) during breeding.
✂️ Grooming
A bath available daily and nail checks; it is not handled. Aviary hygiene prevents parasites.
🎓 Training
Not trainable or suitable for handling: it is an observation bird, shy and nervous. It is kept in a pair/group and enjoyed for its behaviour.
🏃 Exercise
A spacious aviary where it can fly horizontally; best in the company of its own species. It is not a hand-tame bird.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 5-8 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will share your entire adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
