Ideal for
- ✓Families with time for daily interaction
- ✓Spacious homes (large birds require a room)

Is the Diamante de Gould a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
12-25 €/month
Quality seed mix, rearing food and supplements 6-12 €; cuttlebone, nest and possible heating/thermostat for the housing 2-6 €; pro-rated avian vet care (including mite monitoring) 4-9 €. Cage and birds as an initial investment.
History and origin
Native to Australia. Spectacular colours (3 head morphs: red, black, orange).
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on species + individual character. **Other birds:** better in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Larger pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Diamante de Gould
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 5-8 años.
Chick
0-1 month
Nest-bound with reflective papillae on the beak; very sensitive to cold.
Juvenile
1-4 months
Dull grey plumage; the striking colouration appears after the first moult.
Adult
4 months-5 years
Delicate breeding; warmth (24-28°C), calcium and monitoring for air sac mites.
Senior
6-8 years
Retire from breeding; maintain temperature and monitor the respiratory system.
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with wings extended. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day outside the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A quality exotic finch seed mix (millets, canary seed, panicum) with vegetables, rearing food and vitamin and calcium supplements, especially important during the delicate moult. Cuttlebone. Clean water daily.
✂️ Grooming
A bath available regularly. The essential thing is the environment: a constant warm temperature and absence of draughts for this delicate bird.
🎓 Training
An exhibition bird valued for its colouring, not a hands-on bird. It does not tame; handle it as little as possible and with care. More demanding than other exotic finches because of its fragility.
🏃 Exercise
Flight in a spacious cage or heated aviary. Moderate activity; thrives in a pair or group.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 5-8 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind that you will share your whole adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Diamante de Gould
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓Air sac mite examination (Sternostoma tracheacolumna), a key problem in the species
- ✓Faecal analysis (coccidia and parasites)
- ✓Knemidokoptes examination on feet/face
- ✓Moult and weight monitoring
- ✓Checking females for egg binding
Prevention
KEY point: prevention and treatment of tracheal (air sac) mites, very common and serious in the Gouldian Finch. Keep a warm, stable temperature (>20 °C; very sensitive to cold and draughts). A rich, varied diet with supplements during the moult, which is delicate. Strict quarantine.
Check-up schedule
Six-monthly or annual check-up with an avian vet; respiratory and moult monitoring.
Warning signs
- !Open-beak breathing, clicking sounds or a pumping tail (air sac mites)
- !Fluffed-up plumage and drowsiness (cold/illness)
- !Interrupted or abnormal moult
- !Altered droppings
- !Loss of appetite
