Is the Pardillo Común a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
10-20 €/month
Finch seed mix, rearing food and greens 5-10 €; grit, cuttlebone and vitamins 2-5 €; pro-rated avian vet costs 3-8 €. An aviary and a legally ringed bird as the initial investment.
History and origin
Native to Europe. Male with a red breast during the breeding season.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** best kept in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Older pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Pardillo Común
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 5-8 años.
Chick
0-2 months
Sensitive rearing; feeding with insects and pap in the first weeks.
Juvenile
2-12 months
Juvenile moult; in males the red of the breast and forehead begins to show.
Adult
1-4 years
Melodious song and breeding; a diet of wild seeds; stress management.
Senior
5-8 years
Loss of vigour; monitor the digestive and respiratory systems.
Care
Cage: at least double the size of the bird with its wings outstretched. A dedicated room is better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit and vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day outside the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A finch seed mix (niger, canary seed, thistle, rapeseed and wild seeds) as the base, with greens, rearing food and vitamins during moult and breeding. Cuttlebone for calcium.
✂️ Grooming
A bath available several days a week for the plumage and to guard against mites. Simple upkeep of the bird and cage cleaning.
🎓 Training
A bird for song and observation, not for handling. It does not tame or perform tricks; handle only when strictly necessary and gently to minimise stress.
🏃 Exercise
It needs a long cage or aviary to fly; it is active. Flying within its housing is its main form of exercise.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal infection), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 5-8 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, consider that you will live with it throughout your adult life.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
