Ideal for
- ✓Families with time for daily interaction
- ✓Spacious homes (large birds require a dedicated room)
- ✓Those willing to make a decades-long commitment (parrots live a long time)
Reconsider if
- ×Homes with no time to socialise the bird
- ×Those who cannot tolerate noise (all parrots vocalise)
- ×Homes with no space for flight

Is the Tórtola Diamante a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
15-30 €/month
Seed mix, millet, grit and cuttlebone (7-13 €), hygiene and maintenance (4-8 €). Separately: a vet check-up/faecal test (30-55 €/year) and a spacious cage (50-120 €). An inexpensive and hardy bird.
History and origin
Native to Australia. A small aviary dove.
Temperament and character
Intelligence varies by species. Parrots form strong bonds with their humans. They need daily mental stimulation · NOT just a cage.
Living together
Children: depends on the species + individual character. **Other birds:** best kept in a pair/group (except territorial species). **Older pets:** avoid — a real risk of predation.
Life stages of the Tórtola Diamante
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 8-12 años.
Chick
0-1 month
Fed on 'crop milk'; nest-bound and very fragile.
Juvenile
1-4 months
Eye ring and white spots still faint; adaptation to the seed mix.
Adult
4 months-8 years
Continuous breeding; calcium supply (cuttlebone) and grit; spacious cage.
Senior
9-12 years
Reducing egg-laying; monitoring trichomoniasis and joints.
Care
Cage: at least twice the size of the bird with its wings extended. A dedicated room is even better.
Feeding: SEEDS are NOT a complete diet. A combination of pellets + fresh fruit/vegetables daily.
Free flight: at least 1-2 hours/day out of the cage in a safe area.
Vet: an avian specialist vet (exotics vet). Annual blood work.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A mix of small seeds and millet for doves/pigeons, with grit, cuttlebone and a little vegetable matter. Fresh clean water daily, essential to prevent trichomoniasis.
✂️ Grooming
It needs no grooming; it enjoys shallow water baths. Keep the cage clean and fitted with suitable perches.
🎓 Training
A very calm and gentle bird, ideal for watching rather than handling. With patience it can get used to human presence, but it is not 'tamed' to perform.
🏃 Exercise
Low energy: it is placid and content with a spacious cage in which to move and an environment free of startles. Best kept as a pair.
Breed-specific health
Aspergillosis (fungal), psittacosis (chlamydiosis), feather problems from stress/deficiencies. Life expectancy 8-12 years with proper care. Before adopting a large parrot, bear in mind you will share your entire adult life with it.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Tórtola Diamante
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓Faecal test for trichomonas (canker) and coccidia
- ✓Periodic internal deworming
- ✓Psittacosis/ornithosis screening if signs appear
- ✓Checking the condition of the feet and plumage (stress/feather plucking)
Prevention
Scrupulous hygiene of water and feeders (pigeons and doves are very prone to trichomoniasis), provision of grit and calcium, a calm environment and quarantine of new birds. It is a very hardy bird if hygiene is maintained.
Check-up schedule
A check-up with an avian vet at acquisition and periodic faecal tests; daily observation.
Warning signs
- !Yellow plaques in the mouth, drooling or difficulty swallowing (canker)
- !Diarrhoea or ruffled plumage
