Is the Abisinio a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
💶 Estimated cost of ownership
45-75 €/month
Food 22-35 €, litter 6-10 €, veterinary provision 12-20 €, toys/enrichment and deworming 5-10 €.
History and origin
A slender breed with an agouti coat, resembling the cats of ancient Egypt. Genetic tests are available for progressive retinal atrophy (rdAc) and pyruvate kinase deficiency, a cause of haemolytic anaemia.
Temperament and character
Typical character for its breed. Sociable or reserved depending on the individual. Early neutering (4-6 months) is the best preventive measure.
Living together
Children: good with respectful ones. **Other cats:** sociable if raised together from a young age. **Dogs:** possible if calm.
Life stages of the Abisinio
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 14-17 años.
Kitten
0-6 months
Socialisation, vaccination, deworming and enrichment given its very active and curious character.
Junior
6 months-2 years
Neutering, genetic testing for PK deficiency and PRA, dental health and plenty of exercise.
Adult
2-10 years
Ophthalmological check-ups, gum monitoring, haematology (anaemia) and weight.
Senior
11+ years
Renal screening, vision and joint monitoring and a geriatric diet.
Care
Brushing: according to coat (short = weekly · semi-long = 2-3 times · long = daily).
Litter tray: N+1 litter trays (rule 70).
Feeding: good-quality wet + dry food.
Vet: annual check-up + blood work from 7 years of age.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Good-quality dry food combined with wet. Its high activity level calls for good nutrition; adjust the portion to its energy expenditure.
✂️ Grooming
Weekly brushing; the short agouti coat is easy to maintain. Check gums and teeth regularly.
🎓 Training
Very intelligent and curious: it learns tricks and games easily. It needs constant interaction and enrichment; it responds to positive reinforcement.
🏃 Exercise
Very high need for play and activity. Climbing structures, plenty of daily play and company: it becomes bored and stressed if left alone for many hours.
Breed-specific health
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is common in many breeds — genetic testing recommended. PKD in Persian breeds and their derivatives. Life expectancy 14-17 years.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
