History and origin
Hybrid breed created in the USA by crossing the domestic cat with the Asian leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), which has a spotted coat. A genetic test is available for the breed's progressive retinal atrophy (PRA-b).
Temperament and character
Character typical of the breed. Sociable or reserved depending on the individual. Early neutering (4-6 months) is the best preventive measure.
Living together
Children: good with respectful ones. **Other cats:** sociable if raised together from a young age. **Dogs:** possible if calm.
Life stages of the Bengala (Bengal)
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 12-16 años.
Kitten
0-6 months
Socialisation, vaccination, deworming and plenty of enrichment given its very active nature.
Junior
6 months-2 years
Neutering, PRA-b genetic test, patellar check and plenty of exercise and climbing.
Adult
2-10 years
HCM echocardiography, ophthalmological check-ups, weight control and constant stimulation.
Senior
11+ years
Cardiac and renal monitoring, vision checks and a geriatric diet.
Care
Brushing: according to coat (short = weekly · semi-long = 2-3 times · long = daily).
Litter tray: N+1 trays (decision 70).
Feeding: quality wet + dry food.
Vet: annual check-up + blood work from 7 years of age.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Quality diet combining wet and dry food, with a good protein content for its athletic musculature. Control the amount despite its activity level.
✂️ Grooming
Minimal: short, satiny coat, a weekly brushing is enough. Sheds very little.
🎓 Training
Very intelligent and active: learns tricks, plays fetch and many enjoy water. Responds to positive reinforcement; channel its energy with play and challenges or it becomes mischievous.
🏃 Exercise
Very high energy: needs plenty of daily play, vertical structures for climbing and enrichment. Not a cat for sedentary owners or for being left alone for many hours.
Breed-specific health
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is common in many breeds — genetic testing recommended. PKD in Persian breeds and their derivatives. Life expectancy 12-16 years.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
