History and origin
The only naturally spotted domestic breed, originating in Egypt; it is one of the fastest domestic cats, capable of reaching remarkable speeds at a run.
Temperament and character
Typical temperament for its breed. Sociable or reserved depending on the individual. Early neutering (4-6 months) is the best preventive measure.
Living together
Children: good with respectful ones. **Other cats:** sociable if living together from a young age. **Dogs:** possible if calm.
Life stages of the Egipcio Mau
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 13-16 años.
Kitten
0-6 months
Socialisation, vaccination and deworming; an athletic, sensitive breed that requires calm handling.
Junior
6 months-2 years
Neutering, adult diet, plenty of exercise and enrichment for its great energy.
Adult
3-10 years
Cardiac check-up, weight control, physical activity and an annual review.
Senior
11+ years
Six-monthly reviews, cardiac and renal monitoring, joint and dental health.
Care
Brushing: according to coat (short = weekly · semi-long = 2-3 times · long = daily).
Litter tray: N+1 litter trays (see decision 70).
Feeding: quality wet + dry food.
Veterinary care: annual check-up + blood work from 7 years of age.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
A quality food with good protein content to sustain its high activity, in measured portions. A good eater that rarely gains weight if exercised.
✂️ Grooming
A short spotted coat of minimal maintenance: weekly brushing. Handle it with patience, as it is sensitive and reserved with strangers.
🎓 Training
Very intelligent and athletic; it learns to fetch and to walk on a harness, but is selective: it trusts its family and is wary of strangers.
🏃 Exercise
Very high energy: it is the fastest domestic cat. It needs sprints, simulated hunting, height and plenty of play to avoid frustration.
Breed-specific health
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is common in many breeds — genetic testing recommended. PKD in Persian breeds and derivatives. Life expectancy 13-16 years.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.
