Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Quality large-breed food, split into 2-3 meals a day to reduce the risk of gastric torsion; avoid intense exercise just before and after eating. Strict weight control.
✂️ Grooming
Its harsh, hard coat requires brushing 2-3 times a week and, above all, hand-stripping every 2-3 months to preserve the texture and colour (machine clipping softens it). Cleaning of the beard and checking of the ears.
🎓 Training
Very intelligent and capable, but independent and stubborn, with a terrier instinct. It needs daily mental stimulation and consistent training with positive reinforcement; physical punishment breeds fear and reactivity. Best for owners with some experience.
🏃 Exercise
High energy. Needs 45-60 minutes or more of daily exercise combining walks, running and scent/retrieve games. Without enough physical and mental activity it gets bored and develops destructive behaviours.
Breed-specific health
Conditions common in the breed according to the FCI group. Life expectancy 11-14 years with proper care. Annual vet review + blood work from the age of 5.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Airedale Terrier
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓Hip and elbow dysplasia radiography
