Life stages of the Fox Terrier de Pelo Duro
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 12-15 años.
Puppy
0-12 months
Socialisation and first experiences with hand-stripping (manual plucking of the hair); managing the hunting instinct.
Young
1-3 years
Plenty of exercise and mental stimulation; a stripping routine every few months; firm, consistent training.
Adult
3-8 years
Coat care, dental health and ophthalmological monitoring (lens luxation/glaucoma).
Senior
8+ years
Annual eye checks, skin monitoring (atopy) and patella checks.
Care
Exercise: 60-90 min/day + scent games.
Brushing: 2-3 times/week; hand-stripping every 8-10 weeks for the wire coat.
Feeding: matched to its high energy.
Vet: annual check-up.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Quality food matched to its high activity level, split into 2 meals. Prone to greediness: control the portion and treats to avoid overweight, which strains the kneecaps and joints.
✂️ Grooming
A harsh wire coat that requires hand-stripping (manually plucking the dead hair) every 8-12 weeks to preserve texture and colour; clipping softens and dulls it. Weekly brushing and cleaning of the beard after meals.
🎓 Training
Intelligent but stubborn and independent, with a strong prey drive: positive, consistent and early training. Work on recall and sociability with other dogs. Bores quickly: keep sessions short and fun.
🏃 Exercise
Very high: 1.5-2 hours of physical and mental exercise daily. Needs to run, sniff and play retrieving games. Be careful letting it off the lead: its hunting instinct can make it ignore recall and chase prey.
Breed-specific health
Patellar luxation. Retinal atrophy. Life expectancy 12-15 years.
🩺 Health predispositions of this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Fox Terrier de Pelo Duro
Recommended tests and screenings
- ✓PLL DNA genetic test (primary lens luxation)
- ✓Patellar (kneecap) luxation examination
- ✓Ophthalmological evaluation (cataracts, retinal atrophy)
- ✓Hip radiograph where Legg-Calvé-Perthes is suspected
- ✓BAER hearing test in lines with a history of deafness
Prevention
Buy from breeders who have PLL-tested the parents: lens luxation can cause glaucoma and blindness if not treated in time. Keep an eye on the kneecaps and eyes. Channel its very high energy and prey drive with daily exercise to prevent behavioural problems.
Check-up schedule
Annual check-up including eye and patella examination. If a PLL carrier, more frequent ophthalmological reviews to detect the luxation early. Preventive blood work from 7 years of age.
Warning signs
- !Red, painful eye or a displaced pupil (lens luxation — ocular EMERGENCY)
- !Kneecap slipping or intermittent lameness
- !Progressive hip lameness in puppies (Legg-Calvé-Perthes)
- !No response to sounds (deafness)
