Estimated cost of ownership

History and origin
Recognised by the FCI. Originally from England. Classic English fox-hunting terrier.
Temperament and character
Lively, alert, brave. Strong bond with its family. High hunting instinct. Prone to barking. Firm, positive training is essential.
Living together
Children: with respectful older children. **Other dogs:** variable. **Rodents:** high prey drive.
Life stages of the Fox Terrier de Pelo Liso
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 12-15 años.
Puppy
0-12 months
Early socialisation and management of its prey drive; reinforcing recall because of its tendency to bolt off.
Young
1-3 years
Plenty of exercise and play to burn off its very high energy; consistent training in the face of terrier stubbornness.
Adult
3-8 years
Weight control, dental health and ophthalmological examination (lens/cataracts).
Senior
8+ years
Annual eye checks, joint monitoring of the kneecaps and adapting exercise.
Care
Exercise: 60-90 min/day + scent games.
Brushing: 2-3 times/week; hand-stripping every 8-10 weeks for the wire coat.
Feeding: matched to its high energy.
Vet: annual check-up.
Care in detail
Nutrition
Quality food matched to its high activity level, split into 2 meals. Control the portion: it is greedy, and overweight strains the kneecaps and joints.
Grooming
Short, smooth, dense coat that is very easy to maintain: weekly brushing with a mitt or slicker to remove dead hair. Moderate shedding. Bathe only when it gets dirty.
Training
Lively, bold and independent, with a marked prey drive: positive, early and consistent training. Work on recall and tolerance of other dogs. Bores with repetition: short, varied and motivating sessions.
Exercise
Very high: 1.5-2 hours of physical and mental exercise daily. Loves to run, dig and chase. Be very careful letting it off the lead in open areas because of its hunting drive.
Breed-specific health
Patellar luxation. Retinal atrophy. Life expectancy 12-15 years.
Health predispositions for this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Fox Terrier de Pelo Liso
Recommended tests and screenings
- PLL DNA genetic test (primary lens luxation)
- Patellar (kneecap) luxation examination
- Ophthalmological evaluation (cataracts, retinal atrophy)
- Cardiac auscultation (congenital pulmonic stenosis)
- BAER hearing test in lines with a history of deafness
Prevention
Buy from breeders who have PLL-tested the parents: lens luxation can lead to glaucoma and blindness. Check the kneecaps and eyes regularly. Its energy and prey drive require plenty of daily exercise to avoid destructive behaviour.
Check-up schedule
Annual check-up including eye and patella examination; cardiac auscultation in puppies. More frequent eye reviews if a PLL carrier. Preventive blood work from 7 years of age.
Warning signs
- !Red, painful eye or a displaced pupil (lens luxation — ocular EMERGENCY)
- !Kneecap slipping or intermittent lameness
- !Murmur, fatigue or exercise intolerance (heart disease)
- !No response to sounds (deafness)
