💶 Estimated cost of ownership
50-90 €/month
Food 25-45 €, deworming/spot-ons 8-12 €, veterinary provision and vaccinations 15-25 €, accessories and sundries 5-10 €. Advantage: fewer hereditary problems = less unexpected vet spending.
History and origin
The term "mixed-breed" does not refer to a specific breed but to any dog resulting from the crossing of two or more breeds without intentional reproductive control. In the UK they make up a large share of the dogs in rescue shelters.
Historically, mixed-breed dogs are the oldest: pure breeds as we know them are a recent creation (18th-19th centuries). Before that, dogs lived without pedigree control.
Temperament and character
Highly variable temperament, depending on the genetic mix. In general: superior adaptability, robust intelligence, fewer extreme hereditary behaviours, an intense bond with their family, and overall emotional balance. The shelter knows each dog's individual character.
Living together
Children: the shelter assesses individual compatibility. Many are extremely tolerant. Other dogs: very sociable from living together in the shelter. Cats: individually variable. Being left alone: depends on the dog.
Life stages of the Mestizo
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 12-16 años (supera a sus padres puros).
Puppy
0-10 months
Estimate adult size to adjust feeding; complete vaccination schedule and deworming; intensive socialisation.
Junior
10 months-2 years
Training and energy output in line with its mix; assessing the final size to anticipate joint needs.
Adult
2-8 years
Make the most of hybrid vigour with basic prevention: weight, dental, exercise and annual check-ups.
Senior
8+ years
Adapt diet and exercise, control blood work and attention to age-related cognitive or mobility changes.
Care
Exercise: depends on size. Small 1h/day, medium 1.5-2h, large 2-3h. Feeding: standard quality dog food suited to size and age. Grooming: variable according to coat. Adaptability: better than pure breeds when it comes to change.
Care in detail
🍽️ Nutrition
Quality food suited to its size and age. Adjust the portion to the actual weight and avoid excess weight, the main preventable problem.
✂️ Grooming
Variable according to the coat: weekly brushing for short hair, 2-3 times a week if long. Bathe only when necessary.
🎓 Training
Very adaptable and willing to learn. Positive reinforcement and early socialisation. The shelter usually already knows each dog's individual character.
🏃 Exercise
According to size: 1 h/day for small dogs, 1.5-2 h for medium ones, 2-3 h for large ones, combining walks and play.
Breed-specific health
MAIN ADVANTAGE: hybrid vigour significantly reduces hereditary diseases. Recessive genes are diluted. Greater genetic diversity = a more robust immune system. Documented studies: mixed-breeds live 1-2 years longer than pure breeds of equivalent size. Life expectancy: 12-16 years in medium-sized mixed-breeds.

- ✓Leishmania test (endemic areas in the Mediterranean)

Prevention
Up-to-date multivalent and rabies vaccination, regular internal and external deworming, and a sandfly-repellent collar/spot-on in areas with leishmania. Neutering reduces reproductive and tumour risks.
