Is the Perro de Agua Español a good match for you?
Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
Estimated cost of ownership
70-110 €/month
Quality food (40-60 €), grooming/full clip 1-2 times a year pro-rated (10-20 €), preventive healthcare and insurance (20-35 €). Occasional peaks: the annual clip, vaccinations and preventive blood work.
History and origin
A very ancient breed native to Andalusia. It worked with shepherds in the mountains, fishermen on the coast and hunters in the marshes. Recognised by the FCI in 1985.
Recognised by the FCI within group 9 (companion dogs). Its small size makes flat living easier, but "small" is not a synonym for "needs no training": small dog syndrome (excessive barking, fearfulness, reactivity) is common when the same routine as a large dog is not applied.
Temperament and character
Intelligent, loyal, cheerful. A deep bond with its family. Learns quickly. Sociable. Hard-working. It needs daily mental stimulation — scent games, food Kongs and short trick sessions channel its energy better than physical exercise alone. It responds best to positive reinforcement: physical punishment breeds fear, anxiety and reactivity — coercive methods are NOT recommended by veterinary behaviourists. Sensitive to its family's mood: it picks up on tension and catches it.
Living together
Children: excellent. Other dogs: sociable. Cats: good with socialisation.
Life stages of the Perro de Agua Español
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 10-14 años.
Puppy
0-1 year
Socialisation and management of the curly coat (not brushed, left to cord); progressive exercise.
Young
1-2 years
High physical and mental output as a working dog; hip radiographs; baseline ophthalmological examination.
Adult
2-8 years
Hip and weight control; retinal and thyroid function monitoring; coat and ear care.
Senior
8+ years
Vision, thyroid and mobility review; adapted exercise while maintaining stimulation.
Care
Exercise 1.5 h/day. Coat: do NOT brush; it is clipped off entirely 1-2 times a year (which maintains the cords). Ear cleaning. Positive training.
Feeding: quality food suited to the life stage (puppy/adult/senior) and size. Weight control: obesity is the leading preventable cause of joint problems.
Vet: annual check-up with preventive blood work from age 5; twice a year from 8.
Care in detail
Nutrition
Quality food suited to the life stage (puppy/adult/senior) and to a medium-sized, high-energy dog. Strict portion control: because of its joint predisposition, being overweight is especially harmful. Training treats deducted from the daily ration.
Grooming
Its curly coat is NOT brushed: it is left to cord naturally and is clipped off short entirely 1-2 times a year. A brush must not be used as it would break the cords. Dry it very well after bathing, clean the ears regularly and watch for moisture on the skin.
Training
Very intelligent and quick to learn: ideal for obedience, agility and scent work. Always with positive reinforcement; physical punishment breeds fear and reactivity. Early socialisation to prevent reactivity and excessive barking.
Exercise
60-90 minutes daily split into at least 2 sessions, with off-lead stretches in a safe area. Supplement with mental stimulation (scent games, Kongs, tricks), which tires the dog more than physical exercise alone.
Breed-specific health
Dysplasia. Progressive retinal atrophy. Hypothyroidism. Glaucoma. Life expectancy 10-14 years. If you go to a breeder, ask for the parents' health tests relevant to the breed. When adopting, ask the shelter for a vet report on the dog's current condition.
Health predispositions for this breed
Conditions this breed is more predisposed to. Knowing about them helps with prevention and early detection. A predisposition does not mean the animal will develop them.

Screening and prevention for the Perro de Agua Español
Recommended tests and screenings
- Official hip and elbow dysplasia radiograph
- DNA test for Progressive Retinal Atrophy (prcd-PRA)
- Annual ophthalmological examination (includes glaucoma)
- Thyroid profile (T4/TSH) if hypothyroidism is suspected
- DNA test for Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism, breed predisposition)
- Skin assessment for atopic dermatitis/allergies
Prevention
Maintain an ideal weight to protect the joints (obesity is the main preventable factor in dysplasia). Keep deworming and vaccinations up to date. Dry the corded coat thoroughly after baths and after swims in the sea/river to prevent dermatitis from trapped moisture.
Check-up schedule
Annual veterinary check-up with preventive blood work from age 5; every 6 months from age 8. Include an annual ophthalmological check because of PRA.
Warning signs
- !Lethargy, vomiting, weakness or collapse under stress (possible Addison's)

- !Lameness or difficulty getting up (dysplasia)
- !Weight gain, lethargy and a dull coat (hypothyroidism)
