Indicative rating from 1 (low) to 5 (high).
Estimated cost of ownership
45-75 €/month
Food (mid-to-high range dry + wet) €22-32, clumping litter €10-15, pro-rated veterinary and vaccination €12-20, antiparasitics €4-6, insurance or contingency fund (brachycephaly/kidney) €8-12.
History and origin
The short-haired version of the Persian cat, created by crossing Persians with American Shorthairs. It shares its brachycephalic morphology and its predispositions: breathing difficulty, facial tearing and polycystic kidney disease.
Temperament and character
Typical character of its breed. Sociable or reserved depending on the individual. Early neutering (4-6 months) is the best preventive measure.
Living together
Children: good with respectful ones. **Other cats:** sociable if it lives with them from a young age. **Dogs:** possible if calm.
Life stages of the Exótico de Pelo Corto
Each stage has its own care priorities. Life expectancy: 12-15 años.
Kitten
0-6 months
Vaccination, daily tear-duct cleaning and getting used to facial handling.
Junior
6 months-2 years
Neutering, ultrasound/genetic screening for PKD, monitoring of dental occlusion and airways.
Adult
2-10 years
Facial fold hygiene, HCM echocardiography and weight control.
Senior
11+ years
Renal and cardiac monitoring and blood pressure, and a geriatric diet.
Care
Brushing: according to coat (short = weekly · semi-long = 2-3 times · long = daily).
Litter tray: One litter tray per cat plus one extra (N+1 rule), in quiet spots away from food.
Feeding: quality wet + dry food.
Vet: annual check-up + blood work from 7 years of age.
Care in detail
Nutrition
Quality food for flat-faced breeds (an adapted kibble that makes picking up easier) combined with wet food to improve renal hydration. Strict portion control: its low activity predisposes it to overweight.
Grooming
Despite being short-haired, brushing 2-3 times a week is advisable to prevent hairballs. Daily cleaning of the facial folds and eyes with a damp gauze to prevent dermatitis and tear staining.
Training
A calm, undemanding cat; it easily learns to use the litter tray and scratching post. Positive reinforcement with treats and gentle play. Get it used to handling, brushing and the carrier from kittenhood.
Exercise
Low needs. Short daily play sessions with wands or balls to keep its weight in check and stimulate it mentally. Low-level structures, as it is not a great jumper.
Breed-specific health
Health tests recommended for this breed: PKD1 genetic test (polycystic kidney, inherited from the Persian); Echocardiography for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM); Respiratory assessment for brachycephaly (BOAS); Ophthalmological check-up (tear ducts); Dental assessment for maxillary crowding. Life expectancy 12-15 years.
Health predispositions for this breed
