Pit Bull Terrier Americano
Athletic, loyal and affectionate with people. An unfair reputation caused by irresponsible breeders and historical selection for fighting. Classed as a potentially dangerous dog (PPP) in Spain. Well socialised, it makes an excellent family dog.

History and origin
A cross of bulldogs and terriers in the USA in the 19th century. Used for fighting (illegal). Re-selected by responsible enthusiasts as a versatile family dog.
Recognised by the FCI. In Spain it is subject in some cases to the potentially dangerous dog (PPP) regulations (see Law 50/1999 and regional legislation). Its historical selection for guarding calls for early training and broad socialisation so that its character is channelled positively.
Temperament and character
Affectionate with people (even strangers). High physical strength. Intelligent and highly motivated. Possible dog-to-dog reactivity. Needs a clear leader. Needs daily mental stimulation - scent games, food-stuffed Kongs and short trick sessions channel its energy better than physical exercise alone. Responds best to positive reinforcement: physical punishment breeds fear, anxiety and reactivity - coercive methods are NOT recommended by veterinary behaviourists. Sensitive to its family's mood: it picks up on tension and takes it on.
Living together
PPP in Spain: third-party liability insurance, licence, muzzle in public areas. Children: very good with its own family. Other dogs: variable.

Care in detail
Nutrition
Quality food rich in good-source protein to support its musculature. Weight control to protect the joints.
Grooming
Minimal. Short coat, weekly brushing and the occasional bath. Protect it from cold and extreme heat.
Training
Very intelligent and motivated, it responds excellently to positive reinforcement. Early socialisation is CRITICAL, especially with other dogs. It needs a clear leader.
Exercise
1.5-2 h/day combining physical and mental exercise. Athletic and hardy; boredom leads to behavioural problems.
Breed-specific health
Hip dysplasia. Demodicosis. Skin problems/allergies. Hypothyroidism. Heart disease. Life expectancy 12-14 years. If you go to a breeder, ask for the parents' health tests relevant to the breed. When adopting, ask the rescue for a vet report on the current state of health.
