History and origin
A cross between bulldogs and terriers in Staffordshire (England) in the 19th century. Smaller than the American Pit Bull. Recognised by the British Kennel Club in 1935.
Recognised by the FCI. In Spain it is subject to dangerous-breed (PPP) regulations in some cases (see Law 50/1999 and regional legislation). Its historic selection for guarding work calls for early training and broad socialisation so that its temperament is channelled positively.
Temperament and character
Affectionate, brave, strong. Excellent with children. Possible reactivity towards other dogs. Devoted to its family. Needs daily mental stimulation — scent games, food-stuffed Kongs and short trick sessions channel its energy better than physical exercise alone. Responds best to positive reinforcement: physical punishment generates fear, anxiety and reactivity — coercive methods are NOT recommended by veterinary behaviourists. Sensitive to its family's mood: it picks up on tension and takes it on.
Living together
PPP status in Spain: third-party liability insurance, licence, muzzle in public areas. Children: excellent. Other dogs: variable.

Care

Brushing: 2-3 times/week; more intensive during moulting (spring and autumn).
Feeding: quality food suited to life stage (puppy/adult/senior) and size. Weight control: obesity is the main preventable cause of joint problems.
Vet: annual check-up with preventive blood work from 5 years of age (7 years in giant breeds); twice a year from 8.
Exercise 1 hr/day. Short, easy-care coat. Mind the weather (cold and heat). Early canine socialisation. Firm and positive training.
