Ocular proptosis

The eyeball is displaced out of the socket. It is an emergency: every minute counts to try to save the eye and the vision.

This may be a veterinary emergency

ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY: if the eye comes out of the socket, keep it moist and go to the vet IMMEDIATELY. The first few hours are decisive for saving the eye.

Symptoms to watch for

  • • The eye bulges or sits outside the socket
  • • Bleeding and pain
  • • The animal cannot close the eyelid over the eye
  • • Panic or shock

Causes

Trauma: road accidents, fights, bites. Brachycephalic breeds (with prominent eyes) are much more prone, sometimes from a mild knock.

Diagnosis

Immediate visual diagnosis.

Treatment

EMERGENCY: keep the eye moist (saline, a soaked gauze) and go to the vet immediately. The vet will try to reposition the eye; depending on the damage, it sometimes has to be removed.

Prevention

In breeds with prominent eyes, avoid risky situations and handle them carefully.
